They mature, they know better.
Reflections on my childhood community.
This brings to the forefront of social/community dialogue WHY “Faith is a mental illness.” Like my childhood neighbour, there are others, too numerous to identify, that belong to groups of “faith” WHO are just as CERTAIN as YOU ARE that your “world-view” is the “Inherent Truth”. Individual ‘group’ echo-chambers that are certain that “their interpretation” of ancient WRITINGS is PROPHECY. The essence of “prophecy” is that the future can be predicted, or is foretold. This view is a close cousin to “reading tea leaves”. It’s simply SPOOFING the naive and gullible in the general population.
Social groups in all societies “house-train” those that live in their geographical areas to a “world-view”. It begins at the earliest possible age to establish social conformity. It’s not about knowledge and understanding, it’s about “social control”. The youngest are subjected to “reward/punishment” before the age of maturity. Logic and reason that would normally develop are hijacked before adulthood. The brain reaches maturity biologically about the age of 30 in our species. Therefore, the social group has another 15 years of reward/punishment to complete the “puppy-training” of the human condition.
The congregation that met some years ago: “Why do 90% of our children leave their faith after the second year of higher education?(University).
BECAUSE these young individuals have been given knowledge beyond their childhood faith teachings. Previous to the age of 30, the mind is still developing areas responsible for logic and reason. They simply come to the understanding that their childhood teachings are no longer valid. Collaboration with others in their environment of higher education opens the door to a lifetime of being inquisitive. They realize that “faith” is a placeholder for “conformity” and control. They simply come to “know better”.
